Lisa Birnbach, along with Chip Kidd, is penning an updated prep tome titled, True Prep.
Her mega successful first book The Official Preppy Handbook was a global pop sensation in the early 80s-- bringing Chip and Buffy to the masses that have never heard of the lifestyle of upper crust East Coasters.
True Prep will be all about the prep scene in an Obama era:
“True Prep” dispenses a dollop of the upper-class frugality, many of its featured items are a bit more upmarket than the duck shoes and other L.L. Bean duds that dominated the first volume. Think Tory Burch, E. Goyard bags and the luxury jewelry brand Verdura.
The new book also includes a section on black preppies, led by President Obama, noting that his wife, Michelle, often appears in J. Crew outfits. The first volume, which has been out of print for nearly 15 years, was not devoid of black faces; there was one on Page 163, a bow-tied lawyer in a crowd at a cocktail party.
AND: Edmund White contributes an essay on the gay preppy scene.
We wonder if Lisa can touch on the surf/punk/prep connection-- another subculture that is represented all throughout Cali and the rest of the country.
