PROGRESSIVE PURCHASES PROGRESSIVE PAPER

Hot and handsome Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook-- you know, the GAY one that the mainstream media and movie studios ignore-- has bought a huge stake in The New Republic and has made himself Editor-In-Chief.

WORK!!

SNAP!!

In his first dictu, Hughes pens:

To the Readers of The New Republic:

Nearly 100 years ago, the founding editors of The New Republic wrote these words to introduce their inaugural issue:

The New Republic is frankly an experiment. It is an attempt to find national audience for a journal of interpretation and opinion. Many people believe that such a journal is out of place in America; that if a periodical is to be popular, it must first of all be entertaining, or that if it is to be serious, it must be detached and select.
Yet when the plan of The New Republic was being discussed it received spontaneous welcome from people in all parts of the country. They differed in theories and programmes; but they agreed that if The New Republic could bring sufficient enlightenment to the problems of the nation and sufficient sympathy to its complexities, it would service all those who feel the challenge of our time.
A century later, people are once again skeptical that quality journalism can flourish. Technology’s disruption of traditional forms of media has led many to believe that independent, thoughtful media institutions are on the decline and that there are not enough readers to support serious reporting and analysis.

But in 1914 the founders of The New Republic chose to strike out and pursue their vision in spite of the prevailing opinions of their time. They saw a need for a magazine of informed opinion and insightful, thorough reporting.

I share their vision. It seems that today too many media institutions chase superficial metrics of online virality at the expense of investing in rigorous reporting and analysis of the most important stories of our time. When few people are investing in media institutions with such bold aims as “enlightenment to the problems of the nation,” I believe we must.

Many of us get our news from social networks, blogs, and daily aggregators. The web has introduced a competitive, and some might argue hostile, landscape for long, in-depth, resource-intensive journalism. But as we’ve seen with the rise of tablets and mobile reading devices, it is an ever-shifting landscape—one that I believe now offers opportunities to reinvigorate the forms of journalism that examine the challenges of our time in all their complexity. Although the method of delivery of important ideas has undergone drastic change over the past 15 years, the hunger for them has not dissipated.

In the next era of The New Republic, we will aggressively adapt to the newest information technologies without sacrificing our commitment to serious journalism. We will look to tell the most important stories in politics and the arts and provide the type of rigorous analysis that The New Republic has been known for. We will ask pressing questions of our leaders, share groundbreaking new ideas, and shed new light on the state of politics and culture.

The New Republic has been and will remain a journal of progressive values, but it will above all aim to appeal to independent thinkers on the left and the right who search for fresh ideas and a deeper understanding of the challenges our world faces.

As the founding editors reminded their readers in 1914, the success of this endeavor ultimately depends on the public support of readers in search of “sound and disinterested thinking.” As long as there are readers who continue to crave that kind of journalism, we will aspire to serve them.

Chris Hughes

Publisher & Editor-in-Chief, The New Republic

Laurence Grafstein had this to say about Chris Hughes coming on board:

We are delighted to welcome Chris Hughes to the top of The New Republic masthead. As we approach the centennial year of this remarkable institution, we believe that he will bring extraordinary talent and commitment to the ideas and causes we value. He not only has a track record of success but also possesses a keen appreciation of our calling. With Chris’s leadership TNR will pursue its longstanding, ongoing mission of helping to define liberalism while contributing to the American project. You will all enjoy getting to know him and you will learn, as we have, that he is a special individual.

A FIGHT OF HUGHES PROPORTION

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes is fighting the good fight. He is involved in helping to stop an anti-gay amendment that would ban the legal recognition of any form of a same-sex union in North Carolina. The vote is happening today, possibly tomorrow.

Hughes has lent his advocacy to the LGBT groups in the state.

Chris wrote a letter to the North Carolina General Assembly:

I’m writing today to express my deep concern and fervent opposition to the proposed anti-gay constitutional amendment, SB106/HB777.

As the co-founder of Facebook, I have some experience with the challenges of attracting the kind of driven, dynamic and diverse employees it takes to build a fledgling start-up into a full- fledged economic success story.

Companies like Facebook, Google and Apple are the future of our global economy. But the proposed anti-gay constitutional amendment signals to these and other major employers, as well as their mobile, educated employees, that North Carolina does not welcome the diverse workforce that any state needs to compete in the international marketplace.

In short, this amendment is bad for business, bad for the perception of my home state on the national stage, and a far cry from job-creating legislation that North Carolina lawmakers should be focused on.

But the negative business impact is far from the only harm of this amendment. Growing up in a conservative atmosphere in Hickory, North Carolina, I felt first-hand the stigma of being different in a Southern state—a feeling that made it clear to me that I was not welcome in North Carolina.

The proposed discriminatory legislation will only perpetuate this stigma for a new generation of creative, talented youth, uninterested in second-class citizenship in a state they call home. Gay and lesbian North Carolinians work hard, contribute to society, and want to protect their families like everyone else. Their families deserve the same respect and the same treatment as everyone else, and they should not be exposed to the derogatory and harmful anti-gay rhetoric that inevitability accompanies these kinds of campaigns. North Carolina deserves better than that.

The next Facebook or Apple or Google could be created by another North Carolinian. Be mindful of how you treat them and their families.

Hughes and fiance Sean Eldridge have earmarked $10,000 to help Equality North Carolina to fight this measure.

Way to go guys!!

NYC: WHERE TO SAY "I DO"

Chris Hughes and Sean Eldridge are so inspiring!

Now that New York state says you can, where do you say "I do?"

The New York Times details same-sex couples and where they are holding their nuptials and apres celebrations.

Hotels like the W are offering "Right to Unite" packages, "which includes car service to city hall, champagne, cake and a party with a D.J. for 200 guests at the W New York-Downtown’s Living Room Bar and Terrace..."

Some couples are marrying quickly while others have inked-in dates way in the future.

In the latter group, are cute Chris Hughes and sexy Sean Eldridge.

**********

FYI: On holiday, Chris proposed to Sean on bended knee on New Year's Eve in Thailand. Wawwwww, sniff, how romantical!!!

Where is our future fiance with ring ( by VBH or H. Stern) in hand on bended knee?? Our white knight? Of late, they have turned into white nightmares.

We'll be single for the rest of our lives and labeled "spinsters." Should we throw ourselves out the window or finish this post?? Oh wait, we still have homemade potato salad to eat tomorrow. Snuff out our pain of being single with stuffing food down our chute, isn't that the American way?? Ha! Sizable & The City.

****************

Of course, not everyone is sprinting to the altar. Chris Hughes, a founder of Facebook and executive director of Jumo, and Sean Eldridge, the political director of Freedom to Marry, are sticking to their wedding date next June. No doubt the weekend of lavish festivities, including a rehearsal dinner at Per Se, an intimate wedding at the couple’s home in Garrison, N.Y., and a reception that evening at Cipriani Wall Street — orchestrated by Bryan Rafanelli, who also planned Chelsea Clinton’s wedding — would have been hard to switch. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Mr. Hughes,

40 UNDER 40

The Advocate has put on its cover for May 2011 Facebook co-founder cutie Chris Hughes and his hot fiance Sean Eldridge, he is Freedom to Marry's Political Director.

The magazine has profiled the couple as a salute to this year's 40 LGBT leaders under the age 40.

Eldridge and Hughes are pretty serious guys. When they’re not hosting or going to fund-raisers, they spend most evenings at home reading an array of magazines (The New York Review of Books, The Economist) and books.

They’re on the same page about a lot of things: politics (“We support all the same people,” Hughes says), sex (“We’re monogamous, committed, dare I use the word ‘traditional,’” Eldridge says), children (“We’ll take our time, but we’ll get there,” Eldridge says), even exercise (they’re both runners). And both of them visibly wince at the term “power couple.” But true to his potential as a future politician, Eldridge has a thoughtful response. “I don’t think we’ve ever used that term for ourselves, but I must say having a partner who has similar intensity in his days, a passion for work in the same way, it makes a difference to come home at night and have an intellectual partner. If that’s what a ‘power couple’ is, then great.”

MAD ABOUT HUGHES

The straight (ICK!) Facebook co-founders, Mark Zuckerberg and Sean Parker, have had their media limelight and even a fucking movie (The Social Network).

And nobody has bothered to mention the other Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes.  THE cute one!!!  The GAY one!!!

Finally, The New York Times tracks Hughes down.

Hughes talks about his new site, JUMO.  JUMO links people with nonprofit and charitable organizations.

The idea is to take the principles that helped Mr. Hughes organize a network of volunteers into a successful political force and apply them to a much broader universe of causes and issues.

Mr. Hughes is not the first entrepreneur to venture into this territory. Causes, a Facebook application, and the Web site Global Giving are among the many existing ways to find and support charities online.

But Mr. Hughes said Jumo would not be primarily about soliciting donations. Instead, he said, the site would first try to deepen ties between its users and their favorite causes.

“The more connected that individual is to an issue they care about, the higher probability there is they will stay involved over a longer period of time,” Mr. Hughes said.

To start, the Jumo site was seeded with more than 3,000 issues and groups. But “anyone with a social mission can create a page,” said Mr. Hughes, who thinks Jumo could become a simple way for smaller charities to establish a social media presence.

We've posted on Chris Hughes before.

GAY WEB FOUNDER CHRIS HUGHES IS PROFILED FOR FAST COMPANY

".....at the age of 25, Hughes has helped create two of the most successful startups in modern history, Facebook and the campaign apparatus that got Barack Obama elected. Both were dedicated to the proposition that communities, and the way we share and interact within them, are vitally important. As he recounts his two years as director of online organizing for the man who put community organizing on the map, the existential reverie is understandable. He doesn't know what community means? Really? "Well, I just never think of myself as being in the business of building an online community."
Hughes is a technology star whose business is people. At Facebook and in the Obama campaign, he has been plowing what he observes about human behavior into online systems that help real people do what they want to do in their real lives. He helped develop the most robust set of Web-based social-networking tools ever used in a political campaign, enabling energized citizens to turn themselves into activists, long before a single human field staffer arrived to show them how."
