Seventy -five percent of Americans believe that homosexuals should be allowed to serve openly in the US military, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The number of Americans who support gays in the military is up from 62 percent in 2001 and 44 percent in 1993, the Washington Post reported.
Eighty percent of registered Democrats support the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," a policy banning openly gay service men and women from the military enacted 15 years ago under the Clinton administration. The push for the repeal is gaining momentum. Support from Republicans for repeal has doubled, from 32 to 64 percent, since "don't ask, don't tell" was enacted, the Post reported.
The Post-ABC poll, conducted July 10-13, also showed that more than 80 percent of women support gays in the military, compared to approximately 67 percent of men. ( The Advocate)
