How can one NOT take a dip into A Different Light Bookstore when strolling along LA's Santa Monica Boulevard.
The store carries everything: the latest titles from scribes Brett Easton Ellis and Brad Gooch to t-shirts to birthday cards to Bel-Ami picture books with calendars to match, natch, to the latest copy of Vanity Fair and Freshman. They were even selling the morning papers such as USA Today and The New York Times, which I would try to buy from them if I was in the area to give them the business.
Well this marquee business is shutting it's doors and only keeping the San Francisco location open and the online business to flourish.
What a sad day for all of us and the future generations that won't be able to experience a trip to this landmark LGBT bookstore to discover the latest queer tome or find the latest lesbian self-help book.
Blame it on the recession and the massive renovations of sidewalks along Santa Monica Blvd. The construction has dented all the businesses along that stretch because parking became a pain and foot traffic was hindered.
My heart goes out to Bill Barker the owner of ADL and I will make it my priority to try to shop at his website to support him.
Thank you Mr. Barker for providing me with hours of pure bliss to roam the shelves of your store and make my never ending list of books that I wanted to read and buy.
Thank you for all your in-house meet -and- greets with the authors, like Christopher Rice.
All of these will be memories to smile upon.
