America's newest congressional stud is Carte Goodwin. Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia appointed Goodwin to take the seat vacated by the late Sen. Robert Byrd.
The post is temporary until a special election in November.
The New York Times details:
At 36, Mr. Goodwin will become the youngest member of the Senate, replacing George LeMieux of Florida, 41, himself an interim senator.
The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, said on Thursday that West Virginia’s new senator would be sworn in on Tuesday.
Mr. Manchin, a Democrat, called a special session of the West Virginia Legislature to clarify the state’s law on how to replace senators — and presumably set up a special election for the seat long held by Mr. Byrd. The Charleston Gazette has reported that state lawmakers at the session are concerned that initial efforts at legislation gave the governor too much leeway to establish special election dates, among other concerns.
