KHOU-TV reports: The protest took place outside of Hamilton Middle School. It was organized in the wake of the death of 13-year-old Asher Brown, a Hamilton student who took his own life – allegedly because he was bullied by classmates.
Brown’s family said he was tormented for being gay and Buddhist.
District officials said they canceled activities because they didn’t know how many protesters to expect. In the end, a few dozen showed up.
"We really see it as being more of a national problem than a Texas problem," one protester said.
Many local school districts, including Cy-Fair, consider repeated bullying a Level Three offense, on a one to five scale.
In HISD, bullies can be suspended for up to three days.
