Rafael Nadal's childhood friend and fellow tennis peer, Mathieu Montcourt, 24, was found dead on a stairwell of his Paris apartment.
Cause of death is unknown and an autopsy will be underway.
A slight scandal ensconced Montcourt in May when he was dealt a five-week ban and fined $12,000 for betting on other matches. The French player complained that he thought the punishment was too harsh. He also claimed that he never bet more than $3 at any time and NEVER on his own matches. However, The Court of Arbitration for sport found he bet on 36 tennis events and a total of $192 wagered in 2005.
2008 Wimbledon winner Nadal on his web site stated: This morning I woke up with one of the worst news anyone can receive.... I heard about the death of our friend Mathieu Montcourt. I am still under shock for this. I can't believe it."
The French Tennis Federation quipped: "It is with great sadness that the French tennis federation has learned of the sudden death of Mathieu Montcourt.......Mathieu was an enthusiastic young man, passionate, very endearing, and extremely appreciated for his kindness and politeness."
