ELIZABETH TAYLOR, 79

Screen legend and HIV/AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor perished at the age of 79. Ms. Taylor suffered from congestive heart failure while at Cedars-Sinai. Her tireless fundraising and public awareness of AIDS began when movie icon and close friend Rock Hudson admitted publicly he had been diagnosed with the deadly syndrome. Ms. Taylor co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR) and solely founded Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which raised over $50M in 10 years. The screen siren risked her career being vocal and an activist for HIV/AIDS. A disease no one wanted to face or talk about. A very doom and gloom dark time in the mid 1980s. Ms. Taylor made Washington face this disease head-on. A RepubliCUNT government that wanted nothing more to do with AIDS than sweep it under the rug. And Washington's thinking: it was killing the "fags" so let it run its course. The Human Rights Campaign released this: We are deeply saddened by the death Elizabeth Taylor. Ms. Taylor was a true ally to the LGBT community. She was one of the first public voices to speak up about the AIDS crisis while many others stayed silent in the 1980s and she helped raise millions of dollars to fight the disease. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, and to all those whose lives have been positively impacted by the life and work of Elizabeth Taylor." Below is a news clipping (via Good As You) about celebrities fundraising for AIDS. Again, this was something that was unheard of much less done because AIDS was considered a "gay disease." These celebrities were at the forefront and risking career alienation/suicide. We thank her so much for all she did for the gay community. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.
