Being film majors, we love shit like this.....
An Argentine film archivist Fernando Pena found a copy of the film Metropolis, by Fritz Lang, in its original version in Buenos Aires.
New York City will kick off showing the film with more screenings to follow in other American cities. The new version will be billed as The Complete Metropolis. A DVD will be out later of the restored film.
The core of the story is a father and son in a fight for the soul of a futuristic city-- a grandiose version.
After viewing the newly found version, which is 2 1/2 hours, film scholars are now recanting that Metropolis is a sci-fi:
“It’s no longer a science-fiction film,” said Martin Koerber, a German film archivist and historian who supervised the latest restoration and the earlier one in 2001. “The balance of the story has been given back. It’s now a film that encompasses many genres, an epic about conflicts that are ages old. The science-fiction disguise is now very, very thin.”
