WAY TO GO NEVADA!!!

The Nevada Senate is doing the right thing!!

Sack of shit Governor Jim Gibbons' veto on the domestic partnership bill we posted on last week may be overturned!!

The Nevada Senate has voted 14-7 to override it.  If passed, this bill will offer registered heterosexual and same-sex domestic partners the same rights as married couples.

"The vote on Senate Bill 283 came following a dramatic speech by state Sen. Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, who said he had received many vulgar and even threatening calls from people who demanded that he vote against the bill. Those kinds of calls do not mesh with 'the Christian beliefs I was brought up with,' Nolan said. He added that the bill does not at all undermine the 2002 voter-approved constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. 'We have an obligation to ensure equal rights to all our citizens,' Nolan said. 'I believe in my heart that I am doing the right thing,' Nolan and state Sen. Dean Rhoads, R-Tuscarora, who both voted against the bill when it was passed April 21 on a 12-9 Senate vote, then joined the 12 original supporters to override Gibbons' veto by the required two-thirds margin, "  covers the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The Nevada Assembly has the bill in its hands; to pass, it needs two-thirds of the majority vote to override the veto.

Good luck.

UPDATE 6.01.09:

The Nevada Assembly passed the bill:

The Las Vegas Sun details:

In what supporters are calling a historic moment, the Assembly on Sunday night overrode the veto of Gov. Jim Gibbons on a bill giving legal rights to domestic partners. Tod Story, a member of the board of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, said "Nevadans can stand proud." Story said Nevada has become the 17th state to recognize the relationships of gay and lesbian couples under state law. The law takes effect Oct. 1. The vote Sunday night was 28-14, the bare minimum needed to overturn the decision of the governor. It follows the 14-7 vote in the Senate Saturday and puts the bill into law.
