CALM IN THE EYE OF A STORM
A refuge for hurricane-ravaged refugees.....
Gays and straights alike have been entertained and drowning their sorrows in Robert's Lafitte, a Galveston gay bar, just as the few remaining residents left the island battered by Hurricane Ike.
"You can see there's not too much worry and stress on people's faces," transgender barmaid Dixie Monroe told AP.
While military choppers buzz above the flooded city and the rescue operation continues, the patrons at Robert's Lafitte were enjoying a drag show and Tina Turner tribute.
The bar's owner, a former female impersonator known as Big Mouth Robert, said the drinking hole ended up in the drink, with the establishment taking on a metre of water and having its windows blown out.
After a bit of a mop job, the bar reopened, "All of our customers kind of demanded it... We're survivors," Robert says.
Tina Turner was chosen as the choice of music because she too survived an Ike, abusive husband Ike Turner.
The bar has also been distributing food that has been donated for those in need.
A straight customer, Brian DeLeon, who had never visited the bar before says of the place, "It's more than a life saver... These are the people who take you up out of the water and make life livable. Once I get back to work, I'm coming back here."
