This coming year there will be more gays on American TV than in the past few years, reversing a trend of declining numbers of gay characters in scripted programs.
The Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has released its annual report looking ahead to the coming season on American TV and how many gays will be seen on air.
The numbers of lesbian, gay and bisexual characters in scripted programs fell to only 1.1 percent of total characters in 2007-08, however the 2008-09 season looks set to double that amount, with 2.6 percent of all characters being from this group.

GLAAD president Neil Giuliano said, "This dramatic increase shows how far many networks have come in developing complex, multi-layered lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters.
Both cable channels and broadcast networks were looked at in the study. Of the 616 series regular characters across America's five main broadcast networks, 16 could be classified as LGBT.
