MARK SPITZ KNOWS HOW TO BEAT MICHAEL PHELPS

From The New York Post:

Former Olympic swimming champ Mark Spitz may have gone off the deep end when he said yesterday that a race between him and Michael Phelps would end in a tie.
"I know everything there is to know about how to beat Michael, and he would know how to beat me," said Spitz during an appearance at Grand Central Terminal, where he held the copy of the Sports Illustrated on whose cover Phelps strikes a Spitz-like pose with his eight medals.
"We'd probably tie," he added
Phelps' eight golds at the Beijing Games eclipsed Spitz's record of seven, won in 1972 at Munich.

Spitz, 58, said he is "relieved" that the 23-year-old swimmer shattered his record - saying the feat couldn't "have happened to a nicer guy."
At one point, as he thumbed through the SI, which features Phelps posing as he did for a poster in 1972. Spitz playfully put his finger over one of Phelps' medals to cover it up.
"I saw this [Tuesday]," Spitz said of the SI cover as he chuckled. "It's pretty amazing."
Spitz said he knew Phelps would break his record in Beijing, calling the feat "epic."
"I knew it was going to happen eventually," he said.
Phelps "definitely will go [for nine gold medals] at the next Olympics," Spitz said.
Phelps, meanwhile, jetted off to London yesterday, where he'll help with the handover of the Summer Games from China to the 2012 host city during Sunday's closing ceremony.
Since winning the last of his gold medals on Saturday, Phelps has been on a whirlwind tour of appearances in Beijing.
Phelps said he's excited to take a vacation and return home to Baltimore.
"I really want to spend as much time with my friends and family as I can," he said. "It's coming up on two months on the road. I want to be able to see them and just relax."
Phelps, who will begin training for the London Games in February, said he hopes to attend the Super Bowl next year.
"Hopefully the Ravens are there," he said of his favorite NFL team.
Phelps' mother, Debbie, a constant presence during his races, returned to the US Tuesday.
His coach, Bob Bowman, said Phelps' father, Fred, didn't attend the Summer Games as he had in 2000 and 2004, when he stayed out of the limelight and sat separately from his ex-wife.
Phelps has frequently praised his mother while rarely discussing his father.
Asked to describe their relationship, Bowman said, "I think it's just distant. I don't think it's good or bad. There's not much there."
