A federal jury in Boise has sentenced Joseph Edward Duncan III to death for kidnapping, torturing and murdering a 9-year-old Idaho boy in 2005.
Duncan, a convicted pedophile originally from Tacoma, Wash., kidnapped Dylan Groene and his 8-year-old sister in May 2005 after murdering their older brother, their mother and her fiance near Coeur d'Alene. Duncan took the two children deep into the Lolo National Forest, where he tortured and sexually abused them over several weeks. He finally shot Dylan point-blank in the head while his sister watched.
Duncan pleaded guilty in December to 10 counts of murder and kidnap.
Duncan, 45, documented his horrors through video and photos, which were shown to jurors Friday. "The devil is here, boy, the devil himself. The demon couldn't do what the devil sent him to do so the devil came himself," Duncan yelled in one video. "The devil likes to watch children suffer and cry."
Afterward they decided unanimously that he was eligible for the death penalty.
"I should actually thank the government for helping me get my eye for an eye by showing you the evidence that you've seen, the videos," Duncan said during his closing argument Friday.
Duncan may now be brought to Riverside County, Calif., to face a murder charge there for the 1997 slaying of 10-year-old Anthony Martinez.
